Why would the ATF intentionally send guns across the Mexican border to violent drug gangs? Well, the answer has multiple facets:

1. US banking institutions are involved and profiting. See examples here, here, and here (video).

2. The phony "War on Drugs" is profitable from the top down. See examples here (video) and here (video).

3. Because it gives an advantage to the "controlled" cartels over the cartels that don't pay their cut to the proper authorities or launder their money through the right banks.

4. It provides bogus talking points for the demonization of our guns here in the United States.
